IS YOUR BAKING POWDER REALLY HEALTHY?

IS YOUR BAKING POWDER REALLY HEALTHY?

Is your baking powder really healthy?

Most baking powders contain aluminum in the form of sodium aluminum sulfate or sodium aluminum phosphate. They work on the counter and in the oven. If you want to avoid aluminum then you have to use a baking powder free from it. Healthy bakers would use: fast acting, low temperature baking powders that contain monocalcium phosphate, potassium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and starch. But using just aluminum-free powders need not be healthy, as starch is added to them from prevent clumping, and corn starch is used which is mostly a GMO (genetically modified organism).

The reason I am so conscious about the baking powder that I use, is because most of my irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) clients are extremely sensitive to baking powder, and often complain after eating a baked item that contains it. Think of what baking powder does to a break – makes it rise – correct? Wll its will do the same to your belly, especially in a compromised digestive system.

So, what baking powder can you use?

  1. Look for GMO-free ones
  2. Use organic ones, but checking for the ingredients listed
  3. Use organic ones, but checking for the ingredients listed
